Designing Event-Driven Architecture for Financial Systems Using Kafka, Camunda BPM, and Process Engines

The growing complexity and regulatory demands of financial systems necessitate architectural paradigms that support agility, scalability, resilience, and transparency. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for designing event-driven architectures (EDA) tailored for financial applications, with a focus on the integration of Apache Kafka as an event broker and Camunda BPM as a workflow orchestration engine. The conceptual foundations of EDA are explored, including key components such as producers, consumers, and event lifecycle management, alongside architectural patterns like publish-subscribe and event sourcing. The study demonstrates how these components interact with business process engines to coordinate complex, multi-stage financial workflows, including transaction authorization, compliance verification, and settlement processes. A detailed system design is presented, highlighting data flow mechanisms, API-driven microservices interoperability, and secure integration using OAuth2 and JWT protocols. Real-world implementation scenarios are discussed, with a case study on transaction authorization illustrating the asynchronous orchestration of financial events across distributed services. The role of Kafka in ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and scalability is emphasized, as is the critical function of observability and compliance readiness using monitoring and auditing tools. While acknowledging the technological and organizational challenges inherent in EDA adoption, the paper outlines future research directions, including AI-enhanced event filtering, blockchain-based workflow validation, and decentralized process automation. This work contributes a practical and strategic blueprint for modernizing financial systems using modular, event-driven principles.
